The movie genre should just be “Disturbing”. Gosh, I hope he makes a Midwintar about Dani and Pelle coming together and fooling the next batch of foreigners 😂. Okay, I noted the fact that Josh and the non-Aryan British couple were specifically excluded from the cult and murdered. What got to me though was the idea that because Christian was maybe kind of a shitty boyfriend, who despite wanting to break up with someone he saw as clingy and a little messed up stuck with Dany through the worst trauma you can imagine going through with any kind of partner, that somehow he deserved what he got. He was drugged and raped, pulled into that hut by whatever cocktail the cult had given him. His horror at what he was doing - and you cannot argue that he enjoyed what happened in any way - is visible as he moves into the room, surrounded by women in a ritual he does not understand but is unable to stop. Christian's sin was that he was a kid who didn't love Dany, who wanted to break up but didn't because she'd just gone through this awful thing in her life. I was horrified at the ease with which Dany was willing to let him go, to give up his life because his perceived infidelity had so wounded her. She was groomed by the cult to give him up, to cut him away and view him as disposable because now she was surrounded by people who loved her, who honored her, who felt her pain as Christian so obviously could not, did not and never would. It was for this sin that Christian and all of the cult's victims were sacrificed. My horror at this movie was that Christian, and the others by proxy, was given such short shrift by Dany and by the viewer. Oh, we are meant to think, he was a crappy bf who was going to leave her so TORCH THE ASSHOLE! Christian had done nothing to Dany beyond not love her. For that he gets screwed by the cult girl, by the cult, by Dany and by the audience. I'm a woman and I was horrified by what reviewers and commentators said about Christian and the lack of examination regarding the suitability of his ultimate fate.

Midsommar: solstice d'à la consommation. What a crazy trip and the further proof that Ari Aster is the next best thing when it comes to horror films. He really perfectly mixes the balance between great storytelling, character development, suspense and gore.
I like that especially with his new feature Aster took time to really develope the characters and bringing them close to us before it all went insane. This really created a special atmosphere and made you care for the characters.
Florence Pugh is like Ari Aster a great new discovery for the movie world. Its not the first time she proved her talent but its her first big role in a Hollywood film and she managed it graciously. I really look forward to see how her career embraces. We could be in for someone really big who steps into the shoes of one Amy Adams or Kate Winslet at one point.
Jack Reynor was okay. A bit wooden, but I think this is what his character was mostly about. Towards the end he became more interesting. Will Poulter was in for good comedic relief and represented the great ignorance of most of the characters. The setting was really interesting and the film offered a great cinematography with many great ankles. Also the editing and score just added to the wonderful atmosphere.
Good film with many excellent and original ideas. This is exactly where the horror genre should develope to.

This feels like a very needed video, given the overall discussion surrounding the film. Key is the fact that Midsommar is a horror movie; if the film was just sad girl gets happy, but people die to make it happen, that's not intrinsically horrific in and of itself on a thematic level. Rather, the film is sad girl is being passed from one harmful environment to another, but is manipulated into thinking her new life is better, to the point that giving up her individuality and people around her dying feels justified to potentially to the audience. Most of the victims' greatest sins in the film are being human and thus weak at times (e.g. tough for her boyfriend to break up after hearing her entire family just died) yet you're nudged to view their murders as justified, when they pretty clearly aren't. That's chilling. The entire horror is how seductive the cult is to a vulnerable person, and thus how seductive it is to us watching the story unfold through her eyes. On a surface level there's this oddly empowering feeling behind it: a woman casting off an uncaring boyfriend, embracing community and her emotions, going back to nature, all the things self-help types would say are wonderful ideas, yet that is subverted by the fact she's only come to this point by sacrificing the lives of others as well as any remaining shred of her own agency (there's a reason she's dressed as a plant instead of a person at the end. The cult is not empowering for her or other women, it indoctrinates and strips away anything that makes Making the connection with fascism is a massive point, here, and I'm glad the video made it: fascism is a philosophy built on contradiction and a lack of consistent logic, in which you're told that you are by birthright an ubermensch yet at the same time it is continually reinforced that without your race and native soil you are nothing at all. Like the cult it is a wolf in sheep's clothing, the trappings of empowerment and community while instead acting as a vehicle to strip away your individuality and agency.
